SUPPORT SUNFLOWER DAY AND HELP SAVE LIVES

[September 2020 The Sunflower Fund’s annual Sunflower Day campaign will be commemorated on Friday 13 November this year. The much loved and very practical Tube of Hope (TOPE) goes on sale beginning of October 2020.

The TOPE is a multi-purpose accessory and is a key element of Sunflower Day, the biggest fundraising and awareness raising initiative for the cause of blood stem cell donation in South Africa. Proceeds from the sales of the product enables the organisation to recruit blood stem cell donors offering the hope of cure for patients diagnosed with life-threatening blood diseases like leukaemia, sickle cell disease and aplastic anaemia to name a few. It also contributes to the growth of the patient assistance fund, which helps patients with the cost of getting to transplant, support without which many patients would not survive even if their rare matching donor is found.

However, the organisation at the forefront of growing an ethnically diverse registry of stem cell donors in South Africa, The Sunflower Fund partnered by DKMS, has for the past 20 years been leading education and recruitment efforts under the leadership of women.

To provide as many patients with different forms of blood disorders with a second chance at life the non-profit organisations formed a partnership and will collaborate as “The Sunflower Fund partnered by DKMS.”

[Cape Town, 28 May 2020] Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, accounting for an estimated 9.6 million deaths according to the World Health Organisation. Their statistics further indicate that the cancer burden continues to grow globally, exerting tremendous physical, emotional and financial strain on individuals, families, communities and health systems. This burden means large numbers of cancer patients globally do not have access to timely quality diagnosis and treatment. This is also the case when it comes to blood cancer, which makes up approximately 7% of all cancers.

NEW CORD BLOOD BANK PARTNERSHIP WILL HELP SAVE LIVES

[13 November 2019] A baby’s umbilical cord contains blood and tissue, which is a rich source of valuable stem cells. Stem cells are the body’s internal repair kit and have the potential to regenerate and repair damaged tissue.

Current treatments, like stem cell transplants (also called bone marrow transplants) already make use of their potential to regenerate healthy blood and immune systems. That is why it has been used globally for more than thirty years to help regenerate patients’ healthy blood and immune systems in more than 40 000 stem cell transplants.

CAPE TOWN FIRE SERVICES UNVEILS HOPE IN SUPPORT OF THE SUNFLOWER FUND

[21 September 2019] When one hears terms like hope, courage, brave, heroes, it is almost an automatic response to formulate a picture of a firefighter in your head.

Such a response is a fitting tribute to the men and women who often risk their lives and push their bodies to limits to ensure they are fit and agile enough to endure tough conditions in a bid to save lives.

The Sunflower Fund this year anchored their annual Sunflower Day campaign on the theme of HopeTags, which are positive labels that unite and define the patients, donors and ordinary men and women who choose to do something life changing for a fellow human.

RIAAN MANSER AND THE TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM JOIN THE SUNFLOWER FUND’S TRIBUTE TO STEM CELL DONORS

[September 2018] Since the first bone marrow transplant performed in the 1950s, over a million patients have received a transplant of blood stem cells for the treatment of a wide variety of blood cancers and other diseases of the blood and bone marrow. Often, transplantation using healthy cells from a donor may be the only chance of cure. When there is no suitable donor within the family, an unrelated donor, who could be from a completely different part of the world, may be the best match for the patient. The World Marrow Donor Association’s (WMDA) global network of organisations makes cooperation and a global exchange of information possible. This strong collaboration has helped hundreds of thousands of patients internationally.

Whilst it is good to shine the spotlight on these statistics to raise awareness, The Sunflower Fund want to use Bone Marrow Stem Cell donation and Leukaemia awareness month to remind South Africans that they actually can do something to change these statistics.
